SMITHSONIAN SECRETARY LONNIE BUNCH PRAISES LOCAL HISTORICAL SOCIETY

JACKSON COUNTY (December 6, 2024) – The Jackson County Michigan Historical Society (JCMHS) is honored to share a powerful letter from Smithsonian Secretary Lonnie G. Bunch III, recognizing the Society's contributions to preserving and promoting Jackson County’s rich history. Secretary Bunch, the founding director of the National Museum of African American History and Culture and the first African American to lead the Smithsonian Institution, had been invited to give remarks at the Society’s annual history banquet but was unable to attend in person.

In his letter, dated December 2, 2024, Secretary Bunch emphasized the vital role local organizations like JCMHS play in preserving and illuminating history. He praised the Society’s efforts to engage the community through programs such as its historical marker initiative, speaker series, and educational publications. “The work of JCMHS to shine a light on that history is equally impressive,” Secretary Bunch wrote, lauding the Society’s dedication to sharing the unvarnished truth of the past and drawing connections to broader national narratives.

Highlighting key moments in Jackson County’s history, from its role in the Underground Railroad to its place as the birthplace of the Republican Party during the 1854 Under the Oaks convention, Secretary Bunch remarked on how the county’s history reflects the story of the nation. He also drew parallels between JCMHS’s historical marker program and the impactful memorials of pivotal moments in American history, including the Emmett Till markers displayed at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. Secretary Bunch noted, “It is a stark reminder of James Baldwin’s observation that ‘History is not the past. It is the present. We carry our history with us.’ That underscores the need for organizations like JCMHS.”

Maurice Imhoff, President of the Society, expressed deep gratitude for Secretary Bunch’s thoughtful words. “To receive such acknowledgment from the leader of the nation’s premier institution for historical education and preservation is not only humbling but also inspiring. It strengthens our resolve to continue preserving and sharing the stories of our county that resonate across generations,” said Imhoff.

As Secretary Bunch poignantly concluded, “There is nothing more powerful than a nation, a people, or a community steeped in its history. And there are few things as noble as honoring our country by remembering.” The Jackson County Michigan Historical Society remains dedicated to this noble mission, working to ensure that Jackson County’s history informs and inspires current and future generations.
